Polycoria Series

Expression or emotion showing in one's eyes that constantly alters, resembling the phases of the moon. Through installation, video and paper-based works, the Polycoria Series explores the multiple facets of one's identity that shift when situated in different viewpoints. The moon has its ups and downs, everything is fine yet uncertain in its time.

 

A commonplace scene that most people have experienced is the species gazing at each other in an aquarium, the artist switches it into a haunting, evocative and divine piece that responds to the environment and viewers who were absorbed and captured inside.

The series explores natural response of the paper when being cut, as if being casted a spell to show emotion. The series of individual sculptures can be constructed into a larger installation.

In the same way of “line drawing”, the paper cutting art is broken into the smallest unit in the once traditional but now contemporized art medium - the cuts - an attempt to place this form and material in a broader cultural context, re-imagine the function of these tactile practices, replete with manual labor, in the contemporary environment of information overload.

One cut is a second of one’s life, a second of memory. The work visually demonstrate the passage of time, the artist's dedicated creative journey, and the private dialogue with materials—a secret language demonstrated by cutting a material apart.

Depersonalization Series

Depersonalization is defined as an alteration of perception and a feeling of the self as strange or unreal, or by feeling detached from, or as an outside observer of, one's thoughts, feelings, sensations, body, or actions.


Using a form devoid of organs and features, resembling a single-celled organism, to embody the purest concept of disintegration of the human spirit—a pulsating specter detached from its host, its tentacles extending outward.

Cutting one piece everyday to accumulate a large gathering of starlings creating intricate patterns in flight. Though depicted in water, an unheard noise of flapping wings are heard as illusion.  The series of individual sculptures can be constructed into a larger installation.

Cordyceps
Watercolor Paper

The word cordyceps originally means a parasitic fungus that chiefly infects insects, replacing the host tissue with mycelium and producing prominent elongated fruiting bodies. It often affects the behavior of the host insect, causing it to move to a location favorable for the release of fungal spores. 

The surreal version of these imaginary creatures that with neither sustaining organs nor functional structures for movement are the concept refined into tangible forms, which survives in human minds.
